In the hot Nevada desert, Michael Heizer vowed to build “a succession of enormous abstract sculptures”(Éléa Baucheron and Routex). 5 decades in and this project is nowhere near completion.
This ambitious undertaking commenced in 1970 when Heizer started looking for building sites. In 1972, he started work on the “City”. This project consists of five stages; however, money ran out in 1980. With already three “Complexes” built, art foundations were keen to donate to the furthering of this endeavour.
Critics estimated that the project would be finished in 2010. Later, it was announced that the project would be done in 2013. However, it is 2022 and the portals into this temple complex are still firmly shut.
Very few journalists have been allowed to enter. From aerial photography, it has been established that only one fifth of the “City” is done. The mystery develops with Heizer refusing to give interviews, millions of dollars have been spent on an art work I can only describe as a failure. I hope Heizer will soon prove me wrong.
