From March 23rd to 24th, Halcyon hosted a Model United Nations (MUN) conference for more than 100 students from five different schools. Students dressed in suits and ties and stern Hall was decked in flags from many different nations. Sunlight streamed in as students researched, bringing optimism to the people who participated in the event.

This event allowed students to express themselves and contribute ideas to the debates, which were chaired by different Halcyon students, and were organised by Mr Ashraf and his board of directors.

In an interview with the writers, Maria ‘24, the secretary general, reflected on the conference. “(Our goal is) to make sure the conference runs smoothly and people have fun.”

She said the conference “is about making sure that countries treat their people fairly and listen to them during crises like war.”

She said favourite thing about MUN is sitting in on the debates and giving speeches as well as “talking to people, sometimes people you didn’t know before.”

The thing she found most challenging, she said, was to make sure that everyone attended.

Someone else who helped with the attendance was Omar ‘24, head of the Head of Public Relations. He helped organise the conference by sending emails to other schools and giving a chance to other schools to participate in the conference.

The head of logistics was also a Halcyon student, Tom ‘24. He had to make sure all the rooms were booked and give the participants of the MUN a country to represent for their debate.

Tom said, “I like meeting new people, going to the debates, and seeing other people add opinions.”

It is also important to think about the IB learner profile this event brought us. After talking about this with Tom he said his communication skills improved because he had to communicate with his team and new people.
